The mantras (prayers or chants) taken before and after each Ashtanga practice help mark your practice as sacred. They invite the tone of humility and humbleness, and set an intention for transformation and understanding to happen at a deeper level. I’ve included the words to the opening mantra below, along with a translation and link to an audio recording for pronunciation. Release your inhibitions and allow the sound to come out of you, feeling the vibration throughout your entire being and listening to the sound you are creating. Chanting, like asana practice, tones and soothes your nervous system and calms your mind. Pause after completing the chant and notice how you feel, especially noting how clear your mind is.
